HALL OF FAME ANNOUNCES 2013 INDUCTEES

By Roland Cilliers - CottageCountryNow.cae (Excerpt)

Bobby Orr Hall of FamePARRY SOUND - The Bobby Orr Hall of Fame will welcome a few names who aren’t known for their athletic achievements.
This year’s inductees are performers Tom Cochrane and Michael Burgess and the corporations, Mastercard and M&M Meat Shops.
This year is notable because it marks the 10th anniversary of the Hall of Fame.
Dave Garagan, chair of induction committee, said this year they wanted to provide recognition to the people who had been instrumental in supporting the hall. “The opportunity to reflect on the past resulted in the realization that there were another category of contributors who deserve recognition in the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame. These are our present day heroes, often in the background contributing silently to help the hall of fame continue to develop and grow,” Garagan said. The four new inductees will be joining a prestigious list of individuals that include Don Cherry, Bobby Orr and Marianne King-Wilson. Inductees are celebrated on the second floor of the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame.
This year’s induction ceremony will take place on Saturday, July 13, and will be part of a week-long celebration. The week will kick off on July 7 with opening ceremonies and a concert by a yet-to-be-revealed performer.
“For most of us, it’s all about the kids,” Garagan said. “We want to get them involved. We want them to know what Bobby Orr’s legacy is, what type of a humanitarian person he is, and that I think we can do with this week in July.”
Of the four inductees, two delivered speeches at last week’s induction announcement. Michael Burgess addressed the attendees by calling in.

Tom Cochrane did not speak at the event. Cochrane was selected for his humanitarian presence along with his consistent support of the hall of fame. Mastercard was chosen for going beyond the standard financial support offered by most companies by both promoting and participating in events.
Near the close of last week’s ceremony, Parry Sound Coun. Bradley Horne announced the full list of a activities planned for the 10th anniversary induction ceremony.

junos 2013: tom cochrane to receive
allan waters humanitarian award

By Paul Irish Living Reporter - thestar.com - Feb 26 2013

Allan Waters Humanitarian AwardMusician Tom Cochrane is this year’s recipient of the Allan Waters Humanitarian Award to be presented at the Juno Awards in April.
Recognizing artists whose contributions have enhanced the social fabric of Canada, Cochrane has supported a wide variety of initiatives from World Vision to Parkinson’s disease research. He has visited Africa eight times and Asia twice on behalf of World Vision.
As well, he’s visited Canadian troops in Afghanistan and raised money for tsunami-relief efforts.
“ … It’s an odd thing to receive an award for trying to do the right things when those things have presented themselves in the light of the tremendous blessings I have received in my life and career,” he said in a written statement. “Every day my fans, family and friends get up and many of them do the right things for other people and the good of our world and country without getting acknowledged. So I share this with you.”
Cochrane is well known for his body of work, with his most popular songs being “Life is a Highway” as a solo artist, and the “Boy Inside the Man,” while he was in Red Rider. He has released 13 albums and won seven Juno Awards.
The award, named after late CHUM Ltd. founder Allan Waters, will be presented at the gala dinner and awards on April 20 in Regina.

NINETEEN THINGS YOU LEARN BY FOLLOWING JIMMY KIMMEL AROUND

By Jada Yuan - www.vulture.com (Excerpt)

Jimmy Kimmel15. According to Carson Daly, Kimmel is a terrific singer. “I would love to have him on The Voice one day; I think he thinks he would get all four chairs to turn. Well, I think he’s good enough to maybe get one or two,” Daly says. “I would love for him to come on and sing ‘Cool It Now’ by New Edition or something like a Huey Lewis and the News song or Toad the Wet Sprocket, because he sings very earnestly. Like, you’re driving with him in his car, he sings out loud with a lot of confidence. Favorite Jimmy Kimmel: Tom Cochrane, ‘Life is a Highway.’ He loves that song.

valentine's day for famous canadians...

By Julie Hunter - www.canadianliving.com (Excerpt)

Valentine's Day"My favourite Valentine's Day happened awhile back, when I was touring heavily with the album Mad, Mad World. It was Valentine's Day and I was on the road yet again. I checked myself into the hotel I would be staying at that night and proceeded to unpack my suitcase when I found a Valentine's Day card from my wife stuffed into my suitcase. As I opened the card a photo slipped out of it of my wife in a bustier in bed with a giant cardboard cutout of me playing my guitar, with a huge grin on her face. I laughed so hard. It was very cute." -- Tom Cochrane
